The Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand refers to the five confluences of rivers that hold immense religious significance in Hinduism. These sacred sites are located in the picturesque state of Uttarakhand in the northern part of India. The term "Prayag" means the confluence of rivers, and "Panch" translates to five, making these confluences collectively known as the Panch Prayag.
The five Panch Prayags are:
Devprayag: Devprayag is the first of the Panch Prayags, located at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. This sacred site is considered the starting point of the Ganges River, known as the Bhagirathi here. It is believed that Lord Rama performed penance at Devprayag to atone for the sin of killing Ravana.
Rudraprayag: Rudraprayag is the second Prayag, formed by the union of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. The town of Rudraprayag is named after Lord Shiva, as it is believed that Shiva appeared here in the form of Rudra.
Karnaprayag: Karnaprayag is the third Prayag, where the Alaknanda River meets the Pindar River. The place is named after Karna, one of the prominent characters from the Indian epic Mahabharata.
Nandaprayag: Nandaprayag is the fourth Prayag, formed by the merging of the Alaknanda River with the Nandakini River. It is named after Nanda, the king of Nanda dynasty and the foster father of Lord Krishna.
Vishnuprayag: Vishnuprayag is the fifth and final Prayag, where the Alaknanda River joins the Dhauliganga River. The place is named after Lord Vishnu, and there is a small temple dedicated to Vishnu at this confluence.
The Panch Prayag holds immense religious importance for Hindu pilgrims, and visiting these sacred confluences is an integral part of the Char Dham Yatra, a significant pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand. The region surrounding these Prayags is not only spiritually enriching but also offers breathtaking natural beauty, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking both spirituality and adventure in the lap of the Himalayas.
